How It All Began
As with all places that American settlers came across in their travels west, it was occupied by the Native Americans. It is said, by modern scientists today, that the tribes in this area have been here for almost 12,000 years area this is determined by the artifacts that have survived, and carbon dating in testing that has been done. There were actually two groups of people, one at the Root watershed, and the Hopewell tribes that were in the same general vicinity, all of which came into contact with Americans. History actually dates the first contact with these Native Americans at 1674. People are traveling from Green Bay, into what was called the Illinois Confederation territory, after which they established a trading post at Lake Michigan right where the Root River empties into it. This is where Racine now resides, and has grown quite a bit from that original camp and trading post.
